Question

Trying to install Gentoo--can't get eth0

Asked by: kayvey

I have the x86 install CD booted up on my laptop, and when I do an ifconfig, only the lo interface is there.. interface not found..  I have been trying modprobe with all the stuff in /lib/modules, but no go.. now I did a lspci.. and two entries are giving me a sinking feeling that I am totally hosed:

Network Controller: Intel Corporation Unknown device 4232
Ethernet Controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. Unknown device 4380 (rev 10)

am I hosed, or can I get a driver?

How old is the install CD?

Seems that the correct driver isn't includeed in your install cd.

Try to download a new release of the gentoo cd, or use another not gentoo live cd which provides this driver. I prefer grml http://www.grml.org as live cd, but i can't give a guarantee that this cd supports your network card.

You don't need the gentoo cd to install gentoo. Just make the partitioning from the live cd, download the stage3 archive from a mirror, extract it and chroot.
