asked on

open eucalyptus

Not sure I want to take part in a project where folks don't even reply to the following questions but I'm still curious about the open eucalyptus project so am posting it here as well.

Anyhow, two questions.

1: I run a number of ESXi servers which all need individual attention. I've read that this project could consolidate all of these servers into a cluster with one single interface. Is this the case?

2: We don't run windows very much, mostly linux servers on IBM LS20 blades which have dual 2x2.2Ghz/8GB. I've read that this project requires VT enabled CPU's but so far, I've only ever needed those for win servers. How important is this for this project and is it mainly for eucalyptus, in order to share resources or for the guests themselves if running win machines?

Thanks very much.

Isn't vCenter their commercial solution? I'm using ESXi in this case, it's a development environment which uses all open source/free :).
In reading about the above project, this is what an article was talking about, being able to for example, create a cluster of servers, which for example, could run ESXi, across multiple servers. Therefore, no need for additional vmware tools.

Well, the project sounds like a normal cluster with a front end GUI so my guess is it would allow for other applications. There are many good virtualization solutions in the open source world. I've used Xen and I played with another which I can't recall since we didn't put it into production. So bottom line sounds like in this application at least, it's not what I thought it was

And yes, that's what it was about the VT CPU's, running 64bit. I kept thinking it was that win machines needed special access to CPU functions.
Thing I don't understand is that the ls20's are 64bit, are running 64bit linux servers on ESXi so wasn't, or am not, sure why Eucalyptus needs it if this is all it's for.

Thanks very much, I believe this answers what I need.

Thanks for the question...good to read about other products other than VMware :)

What's going on?
Did I not close this as I should? I felt one was a lead, the other was the answer.
I felt that I needed some points as I was the first to comment on the limited functionality of VMware ESXi and vCenter.
I am ok with arunraju's suggestions/recommendations.

I'm glad you worked it out :).

As I said, I felt the first reply was more of a lead as I know about VMware's commercial solutions but the second reply confirmed some things and also covered the second part of the question.

All good then.
