How do I install ubuntu desktop environment or kde on newly installed ubuntu server?
Hello Experts,
I followed some threads that I found on how to install Ubuntu Server operating system on a custom built server, but now I want to install the Ubuntu desktop environment so I have a graphical user interface to work with. I can't seem to be able to download it. It looks like the server operating system installed successfully, but when I run the command: sudo apt-get update, and sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop, it takes a long time and then says things like "failed to fetch 'http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/oneiric-backports'". There are a bunch of "failed to ______" lines that ultimately end with asking for my next command. This is my first time using Linux seriously. Other times, I played around a little bit, but I know pretty much nothing about Linux. Can someone please tell me how to install the desktop environment gui on this? I am trying to set this up as a file server at the company I work for. Can I install the kde environment using a usb thumb drive instead of using those commands?? Please help.

Rindi,
Can I use Lubuntu or Xubuntu as a file server for 350 employees? I was told that desktop operating systems can't support too many simultaneous connections and that I'd be better off with a server OS for this.
lego,
How do I move the screen up to find where it explains about the resolf.config info?

and can Samba file server run on Ubuntu desktop?
You can use WinSCP (should be the easiest way out) to transfer files from Windows to Ubuntu and the other way around.

Looks like the machine doesn't have DNS servers to resolve to.
if /etc/resolv.conf is empty; put this
nameserver 8.8.8.8
