The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

New secondary exchange server not recieving email - Sends fine - primary sends and recieves fine.

Asked by pkillur in Red Hat Linux, Exchange Email Server, SendMail Email Server

Hello.  I have a question that is boggling my mind.

We currently have an existing exchange 2000 mailserver running on Microsoft Server 2000.  This is set to forward all mail to a RedHat EL server (hereby referred to as G1 for gateway1).  As such, we have the in place server (hereby referred to as S1).  In exchange system admin, we have an SMTP connector set to forward all mail to our gateway using an IP in brackets [xxx.xxx.xxx.55].  This setup has been in place for over a year and works perfectly fine.

Well, because of mailbox bloat (despite a nazi-esque "we're going to delete email after 30 days" policy) we have gotten too close for comfort for our current 1 server setup.  So, I am tasked with bringing another Server2k exchange2k server online until we migrate to the new servers next year (hereby referred to as S2).

I have exchange2k installed and I have migrated my test account "ahab.quiquaig" onto S2 and have gotten strange errors from the server.  I can send email out of the server, but from the headers, it takes a completely different path. As well, I can send out email, but I can not receive email from the outside INTO the server S2, but it works fine on S1.

My suspicion after reading http://support.microsoft.com/kb/294736, it says not to have SMTP connectors set up on a virtual server (which is set to be S1) unless you only send email OUT and not to other servers.  As well, I suspect that my virtual exchange settings are jacked up as well because I can not get the public folders to replicate from S1 to S2.  On the replicated folders status it says "In Sync" on S1's status, and "Local Modified" on S2's status.  It seems like there is only a one-way flow of information from S2 to the outside world.

What do I need to do to get my mailflow to work this desired way:

Outbound email (sent on a profile from S2)

S2 -> S1 -> G1 -> Inet -> end point

Inbound email (sent to a profile on S2)

Sender -> inet ->G1 ->S1 ->S2

????

Do I need to install a new server to be the "virtual server" so I can have the SMTP connector on S1?  It's not possible to remove the SMTP connector because we need to funnel email in and out of our redhat box for spam and sendmail functions on our Linux gateway.
