Changing Logical Volume Partition Size

Hello...
I'm running RedHat Enterprise 4 and need some help on changing the size of my 'Swap' logical volume. I'm a bit of a linux newbie so please be bear with me. My 'Swap' logical volume is currently set at 2GB and cannot be extended...it is LOGVOL01. However, the Root FileSystem (LOGVOL00) has tons of FREE space available. I can edit the LOGVOL00 and size it down so as to make GB's free and available. When I do this I then get a popup message saying that the "Logical Volume /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 is currently mounted on /. In order to complete request, it has to be unmounted. Are you sure you want it mounted?"
What happens when you unmount the root filesystem? Won't it crash or get data corruption?
Please help....any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thx much...
