accessing root of linux server via WS FTP?

Good everyone,

I just had a dedicated server installed with our hosting company. It seems that the index.htm file is not automatically recognized. From my research here I have found out I need to define the conf/httpd.conf
file for the server and add the relevant entries such as DirectoryIndex index.html

So far so good. The problem is that I just manage the servers via Plesk and know how to upload html to the right directory. I don't know how to access the server via Putty etc. and don't want to even attempt it with the commands I don't even know about.

So, having the root password to the server I wonder if anyone of you know if it is possible to access the server via an FTP cflient? I normally use WS FTP (version 2007.0.0.2)

Any help would be much appreciated.
