iptables v1.2.9: can't initialize iptables table

I am trying to setup iptables but when I run "iptables -L" I receive the following error message:
"iptables v1.2.9: can't initialize iptables table `filter': iptables who? (do you need to insmod?)"

The Linux version is Red Hat Linux 7.3 2.96-110.

Please let me know what other information you will need to help get this working, thanks.
