Question

Load average increasing tremendously- REHL 5

Asked by: c00kie88

hi all,

I have a new box, running red hat enterprise version 5, only running web server.
I found out that the load average increasing so high, therefore sendmail is not working.
When i do command ps -ef, it gives me output below..

I realized that i might have to disabled unnessary services..
e.g. From output below, why httpd have 6 instances running..

I don't understand.. i assumed httpd is forking but why?
What should i do to reduce my server load just purely to run httpd, mysql and php and sendmail and backup?
Please advise
