Could not initialize class sun.awt.X11GraphicsEnvironment

Installing an application that requiresjava GUI. Jave installed correctly but get message Could not initialize class sun.awt.X11GraphicsEnvironment using Java jdk1.6.0_14 and then tried 15 without success.

Googled and found System.setProperty("java.awt.headless", "true");
Command allegedley will solve initial problem but will not execute as syntax error near unexpected token `'java.awt.headless"''.
