How to get Apache to read php files correctly?

I just installed Slackware 11 and apache is installed and working for html wise but I uploaded some php files and all i see is text. How do i get apache to work with php?

either in your httpd.conf or .htaccess add:

AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .html .extensionyouwant

did you also install php? just an after thought?

does it matter where i put
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .html .extensionyouwant

i could not tell if php was installed so i DL it and did the insturctions from php to install  but I do see any php files in the root tree other than the directory i unziped to

make
make install
