I have recently moved to Slackware as my desktop OS. I have previously used Linux disros like Ubuntu, Fedora and OpenSUSE which all came with graphical tools. To connect to a VPN i used pptpconfig.
How would I go about setting up a pptp client to connect to a VPN in Slackware 12.1 using kernel 2.6.24.5.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

have you read the manual pages for pptpd & pptpd.conf?
typicaly you would setup a /etc/pptpd.conf configuration file
according to those documents with appropriate values.
All these tools use pppd (for the ppp protocol) as a basic handler.
PArt fo the setup values are passw down to a pppd process.
So you could google around to some specifics using pppd in stead of using pptpd
