Sorting a file by first field in Linux with a perl script

Hi, I am trying to sort a file using perl in a Linux environment. The sort process is just one step of a much larger process that is running fine.

I only want to sort on the first field, but it not working and this is causing me problems. My sort is sorting on the full line (not just the first field). The fields are delimited by '^'.

If I can sort only on the first field, I will have all the data "VJAKKA" listed together followed by "VJAKKA1". The data below shows how it is currently sorting.

Here is an example of one of the commands I have tried within by program with a sample of the output:

sort -t'^' -k1 input_file.txt > output_file.txt

VJAKKA ^
VJAKKA ^
VJAKKA1 ^
VJAKKA1 ^
VJAKKA1 ^222222222
VJAKKA ^111111111

Any suggestions are much appreciated.
