Please post the messages you got from Ghost gui when you clone the disk.
Did you see the file and directory count when clone it? If you see the file count on the source disk, then the ghost can read the source image ok. Otherwise, the image you create has problem.
Besides, make sure you can see the target disk in Ghost. Sometimes, you have newer disk controller which Ghost doesn't support, which need third party driver for Ghost to see the target disk.

I am not familiar with Symantec Ghost, however in answer to your request for alternative ways to deploy images you should take a look at G4L (Ghost4Linux) at http://sourceforge.net/pro jects/g4l/
It has the ability to backup any whole device, just certain partitions, or filesystem structures, by using a LiveCD/USB and then run the same on the destination machine to restore. There is even a mode for a straight copy between the two machines without the requirement of an FTP server.
