root user can't start Firefox on SUSE linux

If I log in as root and try to start Firefox - nothing happens.  The waiting/working icon displays for 10-12 seconds and then goes back to a normal pointer.  Nothing happens - no error or other messages.   If I log on as another user Firefox will run fine.

I really need Firefox to run when I'm logged in as root.

Ideas??
