Windows XP, Ubuntu & GRUB

I had the following configuration
partition1: windows XP
partition2: ubuntu
partition3: FAT32 - data only partition
partition4: unused - 3.8GB

I installed windows, then ubuntu & had GRUB as my boot loader. Then I had to reinstall XP which overwrote the boot loader. and obviously I can't dual boot. Is there a means to change back to GRUB without reinstalling ubuntu? I also have external HD which I can [after some effort] use to boot from if needed.
