accessing windows share in ubuntu: "the folder contents could not be displayed"

Asked by BlearyEye in Ubuntu, Linux

Tags: ubuntu, linux, 7.10

I've just installed Ubuntu 7.10 on a lan that includes xp and vista machines. I'd like to access shared storage on those machines. I'm a newbie for Ubuntu, somewhat experienced with Linux in general, but by no means an expert.

When I select Places -> Connect to Server -> Browse Network, "Windows Network" shows up; when I click on that, the workgroup "main" shows up, as it should. When I click on "main", I get "The folder contents could not be displayed"

Ideas?
