I've just got a new ViewSonic VX2255wmb 22-inch LCD monitor. The ViewSonic is plugged into the DVI port of my Radeon 9700 Pro graphics card, and I have an old, CRT monitor plugged into the VGA port of the same card. Both monitors display correctly when in Windows XP.
But I've spent a fair amount of time trying to get the monitor to appear correctly in Ubuntu 7.10, and it just won't play ball.
If I run "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg", the machine boots fine, and the login screen appears in high resolution with the correct aspect. As soon as I login, though, the screen goes blank and the monitor says "no signal".
If I try editing the xorg.conf myself, entering the ViewSonic monitor's vertical and horizontal refresh rates according to the monitor's specifications, I reboot and when it reaches the login screen, everything is scrambled, completely unreadable. (It also seems to overwrite my xorg.conf and replace it with something that calls for vesa drivers.)
Sometimes, Ubuntu will boot and complain about "low graphics mode", but none of the screen settings I choose have any effect, and when I click Okay, Ubuntu loads the desktop in low resolution.
Has anyone got an LCD monitor, connected by DVI, working in Ubuntu 7.10 after encountering such problems?
