Hi friends,
I am new in Ubuntu Community. I am System and Network Administrator in an educational institute. Besides the various departments, we have:
1 Cybercafé for Outsiders and,
4 Laboratories for students of Computer Science.
To avoid the investment in purchasing Microsoft Licenses, the institute is planning to use Ubuntu. But I am facing some problem in deploying it.
You see, when I installed Ubuntu Desktop 6.06 LTS Edition then it works well. But I have two basic problems that discourage me to adopt Ubuntu or other Linux versions:
(1) The problem is with Google talk and Yahoo Messenger. I cant run these Messenger Programs. So the outside users have to use
www.meebo.com,
www.ebuddy.com,
www.gmail.com in supplement to these messengers, but they dont have full functionality of messenger programs. For example with
www.meebo.com, Users cant use webcam and voice services and cant do voice chat and video conferencing.
(2) I cant run Visual Basic 6.0, VB.NET and other Microsoft based programming applications, so I cant install Ubuntu in Computer Science Laboratories.
I want to know if it is possible to run these application programs on Ubuntu or I should drop the mind to run Ubuntu in Cybercafé and Computer Laboratories. For example, we can run Mozilla Firefox on Window platform also.
Please note that:
I dont want to make computer dual boot for Windows and Ubuntu. I know that will work but that is note the part of the solution. If I do so, the institute will have to invest money to purchase volume license from Microsoft.
Many people are very used to with Yahoo Messenger and the students have Visual Basic in their syllabus, so I cant use other equivalent Linux applications.
Any suggestion in this regard is welcomed.
Thanks,
Hemant
