nic card not working in ubuntu server 8.04

Hi,

I installed ubuntu on my portable hard drive connected to my desktop. I was able to connect to the internet after installation. However, I am having diffuculty connecting to the internet when the  the portable hard drive is attached to my laptop (dell vostro 1500).

1) when i restart my network services i get this message:
*Reconfiguring network interfaces...
eth0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
There is already a pid file /var/run/dhsclient.eth0.pid with pid 0

wmaster0: unknown hardware address type 801
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
eth0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
eth0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
Bind socket to interface: No such device
Failed to bring up eth0.

2) ifconfig only detects the lo interface

3) lspci | grep Eth --shows the nic card
