How do I upgrade from the 32-bit version of Ubuntu to 64-bit one?

I had poor luck switching between 32-bit and 64-bit Linux installations. The problem is that the file names and paths are the same on both versions. I would recommend reinstalling from scratch. I'd also recommend upgrading to the same version of 64-bit Linux, rather than to a different version. This will make your conversion smoother.
You can save the /home directory tree or only your home directory from your 32-bit install and copy it to the 64-bit installation. This will preserve most of your private settings.
