The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

ISP Dinamic IP on Gateway notified by SMS

Asked by Goofytouy in Ubuntu

Hi fellow experts!
Although I've been messing myself up with Ubuntu since over a year right now, I'm still a newbie (or worst), in some topics, for instance, the one I have today:
This is the situation:
I have a DSL Router with dynamic IP assigned by my ISP on a 12hr cycle.
To this router, I have connected an Ubuntu 8.04 server and a XP notebook.
In the ubuntu server, I'm running a server app that it's available to the notebook but also the Internet (for remote connections).
My DSL router, has the NATs and ACLs for receiving external connections and routing them to the Ubuntu server, and they work well (that is not the problem).
What my real problem is, is that I do not know which will be the IP that my ISP it's going to assign me, so when the 12 hrs have passed, I'm not able to connect to my server again, unless someone at home looks which is that IP and notifies it to me.
So long, I have thought a solution for this problem, but I do not know how to join together this pieces of info:
1) I'm able to (from console), type "wget -O myip.txt http://whatismyip.com/automation/n09230945.asp", and obtain a "myip.txt" file that has my external IP.
2) I've installed mailx so I can send an email to my phone using "mail".

Now, what I want to do (but do not know how to do it) is:
- Create a batch/script file that can be executed on a 5 minutes basis, by cron or as a service)
- In that script, I should be able to compare current IP with the previous IP to see if they are different.
- In case they are different, email the new IP as the subject of an email (not in the body, because it's going to be received as an SMS).

In a few words, I have all tools needed (I guess), but I'm lack of the knowledge to join all this pieces together.
I will thank if any of you it's able to contribute to my knowledge, giving me a step-by-step guide to accomplish this

Thanks in advance
GoofytoUy
