Question

Ubuntu on Microsoft VirtualPC -- error -- This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU

Asked by: DanielWilson

I'm trying to install Linux on my Virtual PC per these instructions:
http://www.cosky.com/installing_ubuntu_lamp_server_within_microsoft_virtual_pc

I'm running Windows Vista, 64-bit.  Virtual PC lists the Processor type as "AMD Pentium 4 class (x86 F15 M15 S1)"

I chose to download Ubuntu 9.04 Server, 64-bit and got  ubuntu-9.04-server-amd64.iso

But when I try to install it, I get the message:
This kernel requires an x864-64 CPU but only detected an i686 CPU.
Unable to boot -- please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU.

So ... which version of Ubuntu should I download?

Thanks!

P.S. Pardon the APPLE VirtualPC zone.  It appears questions for Microsoft Virtual PC are going there ... so mine will too.  I just can't find a zone for Microsoft Virtual PC.

Do ypu have NX/VT enabled in your BIOS? Without this you will not be able to use 64bit guests. Anyway, if you have no need for 64bit in your VM, just choose the 32bit ubuntu version.

Ok, please do this for me so I can confirm the processor type you actually have: Go to the start button, then run, then type msinfo32 (if that doesn't work, try msinfo64) then please tell me the info for the Processor field.

I can't find NX/VT in my BIOS. I did find that SVM (Secure Virtual Machines?) was enabled.

Downloading the 32-bit version ... though the Ubuntu site recommended the 64-bit version.

You won't be able to do so, if your processor has no support. Just use a linux 32bits.

Hi,

Virtual PC is Type III virtualizateion it means that it will completely emulate a virtual hadware where your virtual machine runs. So it is not important what ubuntu suggests for your actual processor. Whne run in the Virtual PC your CPU will be emulated like a 32-bit processor. This is why you've failed to b11t 64 bit Ubuntu.

Virtual PC supports both 32 bit and 64 bit hosts while it only supports 32-bit Guests. So You'd prefer 32-bit Ubuntu. Besides what basically 64-bit OS will offer would be support mote memory beyond 4 GB it is unlikely that you'd need this much of memory.

Cheers,
K.

You can of course try VMWare.

by: DanielWilsonPosted on 2009-08-20 at 04:41:36ID: 25141204

I tried an appliance for VMWare a few months ago and could make almost nothing work.  So I'm trying the 32-bit image on Virtual PC.

Thanks for the help, everybody!

I didn't like VMWare either. First ESX 3 vwas sold then they decided to make it freee. But later changed the licensing. This time they have just cliipped the current version so that the free version can not run SNMP!  This si what happens when you're with a closed source program : )) But VirtualPC is another problem in the neck ;-) I'll suggest you to try VirtualBox. It's free, user friendly  and most important it's OpenSource. Besides it supports 64 Guests.
