Ubuntu 9.04 Locks up Randomly

thanks for reading.

I have a new, fresh install on several new laptops. They are all experiencing an intermittent lockup/hang.

Boot is normal.

Every once in a while this happens. the mouse works but mounse clicks do nothing in programs or desktop or menu items.

right alt + printscreen +k will restart x but other than taking out the battery...

The install is essentially a clean install of U 9.04 with the most recent updates installed.

PLEASE HELP :-)

Can you please post the output of the lspci and lsusb commands. Are you runing any particular program when the lockup occurs? Do you have compiz enabled?

This is most probably a bug in the nvidia driver. Since you have several machines affected I would like you to try a number of diferent things on different machines to see what helps.

Machine 1:
Disable compiz. Go to System -> Preferences -> Appearance. Select the Visual Effects tab and choose None.

Machine 2:
Disable CPU Frequency Scaling. Go to System -> Administration -> Services and disable powernowd.

Please report to me if the problems persist and on which machine.

it only seems to happen when I have additional panels up. i had created two more panels and thats when it started locking. i turned them off and not once in the last hour or so...
