Question

Ubuntu 9.10 Server boots to black screen (still works though)

Asked by: lrbarrios

I have an Dell Optiplex GX260 with an integrated Intel 845 adapter.  Both Ubuntu 8.04(?) Desktop and Server versions worked just fine with the video adapter (after I got the GUI installed for server version).  I've just downloaded the new 9.1 version.  When I installed it, I chose to also install the LAMP server and the Ubuntu Desktop.  (I'm pretty new to all of this and I'm going to need a GUI.)  When I reboot, I get a flashing underscore cursor in the upper left-hand corner of the screen for a few seconds... and then nothing -- black screen.  The hard drive continues to run for a short time and then only ocassional disk activity.  When I've found is that, at the GRUB loader screen, I can Edit the line second up from the bottom.  It's the line that starts with 'linux/boot/vmlinuz' and ends with 'quiet spash'.  If I remove the words 'quiet spash' and then do a Ctrl-X to boot, everything works beautifully.  Almost.  Although I'm getting my max resolution of 1600x1200, I seem to be in some kind of generic/compatibility mode because I cannot enable the cool visual effects and screen fades are noticeably slower than they should be.  I'm sure this is just a video driver issue that is new with this new server (maybe even workstation) version of Ubuntu.  I just don't know how to resolve it.  I'm a complete newb at this but eager to learn.  Thanks for any help you can provide.

Thanks.  I'll give it a try.  Looking through it, I'm not sure I understand all of what it is saying.  I was able to make some progress last night, I don't have to manually edit grub each time I boot, but I'm still not using the proper driver.  I'm pretty experienced with Windoze, but not so much with Linux.  It's so frustrating.  It seems like everytime I try to do something, I get, "Access denied", "You don't have permission to do that", "Read-only filesystem", "You're not the owner", "Just give up and go back to Windows".  I can find helpful suggestions online, but when I try to follow them, many times they are for a different distro or there's some 'rights' issue I need to resolve first.  I spent several hours last night trying to figure out how to make a permanent change to the grub.cfg file (other distros call it grub.conf or maybe menu.lst).  That lead to an impromptu indoctrination of chmod so that I could modify /etc/default/grub (I think) before running sudo update-grub.  In the end I was victorious, but it took alot of time and I was getting very frustrated.  Short of seeking therapy, are there any suggested materials/sites that I should become familiar with?  I know there are alot of them out there, but I don't want to waste my time with just some 'so-so' materials.

Followed the KernelModeSetting instructions.  Adding the kernel parameter 'i915.modeset=1' at boot time, with 'quiet splash' parameters included seemed to work.  When I say 'work', I mean it booted to the GUI.  I still cannot enable the nifty Visual Effects.  I took it a step further and went to https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/drivers-only and followed the instructions for adding their PPA.  Amazingly, for me, that worked without any problems.  Update Manager saw all of the new video drivers out there at xorg-edgers.  I deselected all of the other hardware manufacturers except the Intel one.  Did the install.  Rebooted.  Added the i915.modeset=1 parameter to grub again (I haven't made it permanent yet).  Still boots to GUI but still no Visual Effects.  I noticed during boot, when text is flying by on the screen, there was something that says:
render error detected, EIR: 0x00000010
[drm:i915_handle_error] *ERROR* EIR Stuck: 0x00000010, masking
render error detected, EIR: 0x00000010
[drm] DAC-5: set mode 1280x1024 a
I saw this before I 'installed' the updated Intel driver.  It still appears.  How can I tell what drivers are loaded?  How can I tell if the new Intel driver loaded?  I know it sounds like a trivial thing that I can't get Visual Effects to work, but these are the kinds of problems that help me to get a better understanding of how it all works and how to get around.  I know it used to work on version 8.04, I'd like to see it work again.  Thanks for your help.

Please post the contents of your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file. This file is generated each time the X server (that is the GUI) is started and contains configuration output information (what driver and extensions are loaded) as well as error messages. It is normally quite lengthy.

What happens when you open the Appearance preferences window (located under System -> Preferences), click on the Visual Effects tab, and select something other than "none"?

The configuration panels for Compiz Fusion (the graphical overlay that gives the nice visual effects) are included in the packages compizconfig-settings-manager (for the full control panel) and simple-ccsm (for a simplified one). If they aren't installed by default and you get the visual effects to work, you'll want one or both of these configuration panels.

Oh, and you probably don't want to change the permissions to the grub files. Ubuntu is setup differently than some other Linux distributions in that the root account is disabled by default as a security precaution. When a user needs superuser permissions, the user is prompted to reenter the password (for most GUI applications) or needs to prefix "sudo" to the command to be run at the command line. It'll ask you for your password before running the command.

Also, Ubuntu 9.10 uses Grub2 by default on new installs, which behaves a little differently than grub-legacy. The /boot/grub/grub.cfg file is not meant to be edited, even using sudo. Each time there is an update to grub, the file is overwritten and you will loose your modifications. See (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2). You can, however, add your modset kernel boot option to the "/etc/default/grub" file. Find the uncommented section

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

and you can include the modset line between the quotes in addition to the quiet (meaning no text is displayed) and splash (meaning display the boot splash image) options.

So, for example, to edit the /etc/default/grub file at the command line, merely type "sudo nano /etc/default/grub" (without the quotes). The nano editor is easy for people from a Windows background to use. Eventually you'll probably want to learn vi. When you're in the nano editor, make your changes, press Ctrl-x to exit, denoted as "^X", and it will ask you if you want to save the file and where to save it.

As for cross distribution troubleshooting information, I've found the Ubuntu forums very helpful for keeping the advice to the Ubuntu distribution only. http://ubuntuforums.org/

mobilescholar,

Thanks for all of the info.  Very useful stuff.  I've posted my Xorg.0.log file as requested.  I remember looking through this file the other day.  What a bunch mumbo jumbo.  :)

When I choose 'Normal' or 'Extra' on the Visual Effect tab, I get a small dialog box that pops up.  It says something about 'Searching for available drivers'.  After that box goes away, the screen flashes a couple of times, the mouse pointer changes to the spinning 'I'm doing something' pointer.  The screen flashes again and then another small dialog that says 'Desktop effects could not be enabled'.  End of story.

I looked in Synaptic Package Manager for Compiz Fusion.  It looks like I have the basic pieces that I need installed already.

Yeah, I'm past all that GRUB nonsense.  I figured it out.  I had done just as you said... I edited the /etc/default/grub file.  I modified the necessary like to read GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash i915.modeset=1".  I used gedit because that's the only one I'm familiar with right now.  I'll give nano a shot soon.  So many choices and ways to do things.  Mind boggling.  Thanks again.
