How to control Stereo Mix (What you hear)

I have many ubuntu workstations that need to have stereo mix disabled.
When using a voip app (ekiga) and a standard analog headset w/microphone, I can hear myself in my headset when speaking to someone.

I don't want to hear myself again in my own headset. It is redundantly annoying.
Maybe someone here can help me. I would appreciate it.

I have a clean install of 9.04 Jaunty and a clean install of 9.10 Karmic.

Just install gnome-alsamixer, run it and uncheck (mute) the microphone from the output devices.

Try to enable echo cancellation option in ekiga advance settings.
See attached image.

Echo cancellation will only work if you use the same sound device for in and out audio. e.g. echo cancellation won't work if you use the microphone on your webcam and the output sound from your soundcard (PCI). The reason behind this is the echo cancellation mechanism needs to sync the in and out sounds and this can't be done properly using two different drivers.

Sorry for the late response. Work has been crazy busy.

fmarzocca's answer worked and I don't hear myself anymore, but the the people I talk to can hear me twice, like an echoing.

Its like there is a re-piping of my voice going back into the input somewhere.
Ekiga's echo cancellation option does nothing to stop this echoing.

Anymore ideas?

I discovered how to stop the echoing. I should leave a response here in case someone needs this information.

I used alsamixer from the terminal and pressed F4, then went to "Capture" and turned it down all the way.
This way, the person I talk to does not have an echoing on their end.

alsamixer itself has all the audio controls. You can toggle through the settings using F2, F3, F4 and F5.
