Asked by lrbarrios in Ubuntu, Windows XP Operating System
I've just installed the new Ubuntu 9.10 Server Edition. Minimal install with LAMP server. It looks like some SMB and Samba components also got installed. In the Gnome GUI, I can select Place/Network/Windows Network. After that, I can see all of the workgroups on my home network. There are three of them, no domain controllers or Active Directory and they're all Windows XP (Home, Pro, and Media Center 2005). When I drill into them, I see the member computers. Everything is normal up to this point. When I double-click on a PC to reveal its shared folders, that's where it breaks. I get the dialog that pops up that says 'Opening <computer name>' and 'You can stop this operation by clicking Cancel.' After quite a wait, I get an error that says 'Unable to mount location' and 'Unable to retrieve share list from server.' Of course, these shares work find between the Windows computers on my network as well as the various Macs running OS X. I installed 'smbfs', but that didn't seem to help. Is there some other package I should be installing, short of installing the whole Samba server? Any ideas? Thanks for your help.
