Ubuntu won't reclaim free space made by deleting trash content...

I have an Ubuntu 8.04 machine set up with an external 750G usb drive attached to it.  I've deleted everything on the drive to free up space for our local backups.  I've empty the hidden trash folders in a terminal session since this had seemed to be an issue in the past according to other users (I've searched the db about this problem b4 writting this).  Still, when I check to see how much space is available I realize that about 30 GIGs are still missing from the total 750G.  I have no idea where the 30 gig resides on the drive. When I use the ls command I get no files/folders listed.  Is there another hidden foilder that I am missing?   Also,  how do I reformat the drive in the fs ext3.  What are the command lines to do this?Start Free Trial
