Question

how to receive message in outlook express from dovecot.

Asked by: chandar_bhandari

I'm running sendmail with a dovecot server on RedHad 5 and outlook doesn't seem to download the mail from the users mailboxes.
If you do a test message in outlook everything works fine but if you send and receive it only sends mail but doesn't receive mail without any error.

telnet serverip 110

In dovecot.conf is the following directive permitting pop?

  protocols = imap imaps pop3 pop3s

netstat -an | grep 110
 -> for pop

netstat -an | grep 143
 -> for imap

If you have to add pop downloading in dovecot.conf, when complete
  service dovecot restart

Ok your dovecot is allright

i guess its your outlook setting

how ever one test i will do

USER username
PASS password-forthe-user

if all goes good
then type
LIST
it will show your all mail saved in pop3

let  me know how it goes

also :
when outlook will try to connect to your pop3

keep on eye on, maillog

tail -f /var/log/maillog

you  should see some entery like this

Jul 23 10:24:41 mail dovecot: pop3-login: Login: user=<xxx>, method=PLAIN, rip=::ffff:xxx.xx.xx.66, lip=::ffff:xx.xx.xx.xx
Jul 23 10:24:41 mail dovecot: POP3(xxx): Disconnected: Logged out top=0/0, retr=0/0, del=0/0, size=0

let me know if you can see those

or if there is any error

by: chandar_bhandariPosted on 2009-07-23 at 22:11:29ID: 24932385

Hello fosiul01:

Every thing is working good whatever you said.
When I type list after giving user name and password through telnet-
It gives +OK no message message.

And I also run tail f /var/log/maillog command-
I can see the entry as you said

Should I have to make some changes in mail_location types entry in dovecot.conf file
because i can check mails in mbox file or just type "mail".

by: fosiul01Posted on 2009-07-24 at 00:28:17ID: 24932763

hmmmm

Normaly you dont have to do anything in dovecot ....

Ok so you saying

when you type

LIST

its say , no messages.

but was there really message or dovecot saying NO messgage when there is actually message in the server ??

close your outlook. dont open outlook
now sent an email to your server .

so that email should of store in your server.

now if you telnet to the server port 110
and if you type LIST

can you see list of email ? or it say NO message ??

here i am trying to understand if dovecot can read email from your mbox

also , can you try with another username  aswell

by: chandar_bhandariPosted on 2009-07-24 at 02:16:38ID: 24933216

fosiul01:

i close my outlook and sent an email to server .
that email is stored in my server.

now if i telnet to the server port 110
and if you type LIST
i received the same message
+OK no message
and i also try with new user, but still i am not able to receive mail in my outlook.

by: fosiul01Posted on 2009-07-24 at 02:31:48ID: 24933284

thisi wired ...

for some reason dovecot is not reading email from your mail directory ..

did you change your default maillocation  ~/Maildir  any time ???

by: fosiul01Posted on 2009-07-24 at 02:39:08ID: 24933312

is your email storing in

/var/mail/

location ? or some other plcae ??

when you try to view email in server by yourself

what location do you go ??

by: chandar_bhandariPosted on 2009-07-24 at 05:16:25ID: 24934079

what are you trying to say about this line-
 "default maillocation  ~/Maildir  any time ???"

 email is storing in
/var/mail/username

by: fosiul01Posted on 2009-07-24 at 05:23:47ID: 24934125

what i meant was, if your mail is storing other places then /var/mil/username
but its looks like, its saving in correct place

but why you enabled these lines in yoru dovecot.conf ??

mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir
mail_location = maildir:~/maildir/

deovect should of read from default place

so disable those lines ( you have 2 lines )

then restart dovecot , see if this helps ..

what i am suspecting is, dovecot is unable to read from /var/mail/username Or its lookign to a wrong directory to read emails ..

by: chandar_bhandariPosted on 2009-07-24 at 05:36:19ID: 24934215

hi fosiul01:

i have disabled these lines in  dovecot.conf

And now problem is resolved.

thankyou very much
