Did some more research and came up with this...
Title:Add Host Network Printer share
Environment:
Host: MS Windows XP SP2
Interface: VMware 5.5 Workstation
Guest: Ubuntu 6.06
Printer: HP LaserJet 1200 Series, IP:10.0.0.52
Procedure:
On Ubuntu Desktop:
System>Administration>Prin
(Reading Printer Database...)
Add a Printer:
Step1:
Printer Type: Network Printer> HP JetDirect
Host: 10.0.0.52
Port: 9100 (leave as is)
Step2: Printer Driver
Manufacturer: HP
Model:Laserjet 1200 Postscript (recommended)
>Forward
Step3:
Name: (Enter your printer name)
Description: (Can be left blank)
Location: (Enter location here)
Apply
You should be back at the Ubuntu Desktop with the shiny new printer installed and up in the Printers window.

Have you looked into the printing services available:
If you choose cups things shouldn't be too difficult:
(I guess you need samba too for some printing scripts)
Add a printer, choose smb://host/service etc. parameters according to the add printer dialog
shouldn't be too problematic. I think.
For other printing systems (lpd, lpr-ng) you'll have to create scripts.
