Question

Adding a Local (Parallel) Printer to Linux Based HP t5135 Thin Client.

Asked by: apache09

Looking for assistance with an HP t5135 Linux based thin client used on an Windows Server 2003 network. Specifically looking for further information on adding a local parallel printer to the HP t5135.  As this is Linux based, according to HP all you have to do is type in the printer name in the Printer setting fields(When logged in as Admin). HP support documents say, "Optional" enter the name of the windows printer driver. Once all relevant fields are populated, including the optional fields, you can also Test the settings for the printer. However, all it does is feed through a blank sheet of paper. This is understandable as Im sure the thin client has no idea of what type of printer is connected, only that its a Parallel printer.

Do the Linux based thin clients come pre loaded with all the possible print drivers out there?  I see this highly unlikely but then again Im not a Linux Expert.

Any help on adding a local, parallel, printer to this HP t5135 would be greatly appreciated.

It's windows that is managing the printing driver, Linux only supplies the port or spooler. You'll have to make sure the driver for that printer has been installed on the server.

Yes, driver is installed on the server.

Also, In SETTINGS\PRINTER The printer port on the HP t5135 Thin Client shows /dev/lp0 (seems this is a default and cant be changed, in admin)

Can you post a screenshot of your printer configuration setup of the thin client? You can upload it to here:

http://www.ee-stuff.com/Expert/Upload/upload.php

Make sure you post a link here after that. Also check whether you have the newest software installed for the thin client. It looks as if there is an update on the HP site.

Couldnt take a screen shot because the main setup portion uses Linux OS.

In the end we found it wasnt worth the amount of time and effort to get the Linux based thin client to print to a local printer. Just setup the thin client in a remote location that uses network printers and used windows based thin client with local printer connected instead.

I have uploaded a "screen capture" here: http://www.ee-stuff.com/Expert/Upload/getFile.php?fid=5992 becuase I am interested in finding out the solution to this myself.  If I need to create a new question I'll do that instead but this one already has been started so I figured I would tag on.

yes - see I don't know what all to put in for the entries so that is why they are blank.  Also - I wanted to keep it general so that maybe the original poster could benefit rather than me steel his/her question.
