Question

How to install and configure HP LaserJet P2015 Printer on Ubuntu Desktop 6.06 LTS ?

Asked by: JatinHemant

Hi friends !

I have installed Ubuntu Desktop Edition 6.06 LTS on the Desktop PC HP Compaq dx7400 Microtower. It is installed successfully.

The Audio Driver, Graphics Driver and Network Drivers were detected by the Operating System. I inserted a usb pen drive/ flash disk, and it was automatically detected. Everything is like Windows. BUT...

when I connect the PC to HP LaserJet P2015 Printer throught USB cable, it didn't detect any device as it detects in Windows.

Q: 1 What is the cause and how can I install this printer on Ubuntu ? Is there any program I will have to download, because I didn't find anything like Printer and Faxes ?

Q: 2 The CD that was shipped with printer is for Windows and Mac. So do I have to download another driver for Linux from HP site.

I have never installed printer on Ubuntu or any other Linux instance. Please help me in this regard.

Thanks,

Hemant.

Make sure you have Cups installed. If not install it using synaptics. Then start the printer setup via "System", "Administration", "Printing" and use "Add" to add the new printer. Everything should now be self explanatory, and the printer should be in the selectable list of printers. You might first have to update your system via update manager.

Thanks for your comment !

You see...after posting the question and before your reply, I went in System--->Administration--->Printing--->Add Printer. There I found almost same as windows (but not plug and play detection).

In Local Printer there is nothing much but in network printer, there are four options:
(1) CUPS Printer (IPP)
(2) Windows Printer (SMB)
(3) UNIX Printer (LPD)
(4) hpJet Direct

Now, I want to ask you...

1. What is this CUPS Printer and why you asked me to install CUPS ?
2. When I use Local Printer (Because HPLaserJet P2015 is locally attached to Computer through USB cable), it asked me for the driver certainly for Linux. But on the www.hp.com, they don't support for Linux driver for this device and they redirect to another website to download HPLIP...

http://hplip.sourceforge.net/install/install/index.html

What is this HPLIP ? and how can I obtain Linux driver for this device using HPLIP ?

Thanks again...

CUPS is a printing system for Unux and has the most biggest printer support. I think the driver from the site you mentioned is probably the same as is already provided by the system.

...you mean to say that if I install CAPS and update it then I will not have to download any driver from HP. Because the site I mentioned is for HPLIP and you didn't talk any thing about HPLIP. How is it different from CAPS ?

Please explain...

Not CAPS, CUPS. It is similar to the windows system where you already have a lot of built in printer drivers and you don't have to download the manufacturer's specifically. Also, many Linux distro's update their repositories with current versions, and they often also use what is on that hplip site. So you only need to get the drivers from that site if they aren't already included. They are included with Ubuntu 7.10, but I'm not sure about earlier versions like yours. You do have to make sure your installation is current. Use the automated update feature to make sure, or in a terminal do:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Thank you very much rindi !

Yes...CUPS not CAPS, and your explained me very nicely.

Thanks again.
