Question

Networked HP 6310 - Tree Connect Failed NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED

Asked by: parkhensley

I am using Fedora 10 and am trying to access an HP 6310 via any protocol that will work. I have tried the samba, ipp and other protocols in the Printer Configuration dialog box. I tried to use Mozilla:631, but got a "Forbidden" message when trying to apply the driver.

I can get printers to appear in the Printer Configuration box, but the status is usually "Processing..." or "Stopped" or "Tree Connect Failed NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED"

I have tried using the guide at "http://bobpeers.com/linux/hp_printing.php", but he suggests adding the hplip service and when attempting to start it (I know that it is installed), get a "hplip: unrecognized service" message.

Output of rpm -q 'samba*'
samba-3.2.8-0.27.fc10.i386
samba-winbind-3.2.8-0.27.fc10.i386
samba-client-3.2.8-0.27.fc10.i386
samba-common-3.2.8-0.27.fc10.i386

su -c smbtree yields this where HP00163556E79B is the printer I am trying to connect to:
\\HP00163556E79B
            \\HP00163556E79B\MEMORY_CARD          FLASH MEMORY PHOTO
            \\HP00163556E79B\IPC$

The output of lpstat -s is
system default destination: HP-OfficeJet-6310
device for HP-OfficeJet-6310: smb://MYGROUP/PARK/HP-OfficeJet-6300

I really need to resolve this. Thanks very much.

First connect the printer to the PC locally, and when that works change the port so it is accessed via the LAN.

Also, that printer has a Built-in NIC, so you can connect it directly to the LAN and you don't need to connect to it via SAMBA where the Printer is attached to another PC that shares it and that would always have to be running. Just assign the printer a static IP, then connect to it via that IP.

Thanks, but I can't connect the pc to it locally, it is too far away. The printer is on the network, but  I have already exhausted what seem to be all of the options in the Printer Configuration dialog box and they don't work. Please give me the detailed steps to connect.

Thanks,

You should still first connect the printer locally. Bring your PC to the printer, or the printer to the PC. Once they work together you can put them back to their original location.

Then check the printer's manual on how to set it's internal NIC up so it has a valid static IP in your LAN. You'll probably be able to set it up via it's console. Once you have set that up and connected the printer's NIC via cable to the LAN, open your PC's printer configuration utility (I don't use Fedora, so I'm not sure what it is called there and under what option it is found). Now select the printer you had just setup, select "Properties", and then change to "Appletalk/HPJetdirect". Here enter the IP you have given the Printer, and leave the port at 9100. That should be it.

I've connected them locally, but could only do it by selecting hplip - nothing else worked. Now, trying to connect on the network via Appletalk/HPJetdirect, I must not be entering the ip correctly. Does it need a protocol. The ip address of the printer is 192.168.1.34. How should it be entered?

Thanks,

just 192.168.1.34

You'll have to make sure the IP si valid for your LAN segment, and no other device has that IP.
