The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

crash on X refresh or unload

Almost anytime I try do anything which would involve unloaded X my system completely crashes with no response whatsoever.

Here are some examples of when this occurs:
1. After getting logged into kde or gnome, and choose logout.  (this should bring me back to the login window after refreshing x)
2. Once it boots straight to the login window, if I choose x refresh, shutdown and restart, or shutdown, it crashes.
3.  If I have it boot to a command line, and run xinit, it runs ok.  But then if I try to return to the virtual consoles by using ctr-alt-fX, it crashes.

Now, I've tried running Redhat 6.1, a couple recent versions of Mandrake (can't remember which), and SuSe 6.4.  They all do exactly the same thing, so I don't think it's the linux package.

Note that on my current SuSe installation, TWICE I have been able to properly shutdown without.  Once when it was FIRST installed, and one other time later on (some fluke or luck?)  But every other time it has crashed.

I'm pretty sure I'm installing it correctly.  I've installed it with another Linux user present, and he thought I did everything correctly as well.

What I think is the problem is something with one of my pieces of hardware, but I'm not sure.  Here's a short list of hardware info, ask for anything else:
-Intel 810 Chipset motherboard
-Celeron 500, 96 MB Ram
-32MB Diamond Stealth III S540 PCI video card installed to use instead of crappy built in one on the motherboard

I've had the same problem with different mice/keyboads/and monitors so I don't think they make a difference here...

Please help me to find and stop this problem!!
I will add points to the question if the problem is solved.
