The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

lilo dual boot with Win98se

Asked by dong in Linux, Red Hat Linux, Linux Distributions

I have two SCSI hard disks on my computer, one has Win98SE with FAT32 installed and the other has Red Hat 6.2 installed. The SCSI ID for RH62 is ID0 while the SCIS ID for Win98se is ID1. Both can boot independently if I disconnect the other. If both are connected, then it always boot to RH62 (and the first time when I connected both, RH62 detected the Win98SE disk at the bootup stage).

Now I like to configure LILO to dual boot between Win98SE and RH6.2. So, I added the following lines to /etc/lilo.conf

// original lines
boot = /dev/sda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
linear
// default is linux originally
default=win98se
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14-5.0
label=linux
initrd=boot/initrd-2.2.14-5.0.img
read-only
root=/dev/sda1

// New boot options added by me
other=/dev/sdb1
table=/dev/sdb
label=win98se

After saving /etc/lilo.conf, I run lilo at the console and it didn't complain anything. Then I re-booted my PC and it started lilo, but hang up when starting to load win98. If I press <tab> key before the timeout, I can still choose to boot to RH62.

Can anyone help me solve this problem? Also, please give me a little explaination on sda, sda1, sdb, sdb1 etc. My guess is, sda stands for the MBR of the first SCSI HDD, sda1 is the first partition of the first SCSI HDD, sda2 is the second partition of the first SCSI HDD. sdb stands for the MBR of the second SCSI HDD and so on. Is my understanding correct?
