The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

XPpro/Mandrake9 dual-boot uninstallation left-over...

Asked by Groovatism in Linux

About a month ago, I decided to try Mandrake9, but rather than putting it on a separate hard drive, I chose to go the dual-boot route. The Windows OS is XPpro, the hard drive is a 60Gb Maxtor. I am a Linux nOObie, and the dual-boot situation did not work well at all for me. I'm assuming that the partitioning that I used for installing Mandrake wasn't right. After "uninstalling" Mandrake, the OS selection device which comes up at system startup was still there. I couldn't figure out how to get rid of it so I saved everything which I wanted to keep (to CDs) and "completely" repartitioned and formatted the drive (using XPpro, no other disk utilities). I then installed XPpro and ... lo and behold ... that doggone Mandrake bootup selector was still there!
NOW, all I want to do is COMPLETELY format the entire hard drive (scrub it totally clean), so it's just like it came fresh from the factory, so that I can partition it and just install XPpro. Can this be done by just using the XPpro CD, or do I need to use some other harddisk utility? Either way, can you please tell me EXACTLY how to accomplish this goal? I'd like to do this ASAP, as this predicament is on my "good" computer.
PS ... I'm going to try Redhat next, on a dedicated computer.
