The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

bad interpreter: No such file or directory

Tags: bad, file, directory, interpreter
I am attempting to install from the 2.5 version of the Xerces-c XML Parser from source to a Mandrake 10 install.

One of the steps in doing so is running the runConfigure script, when I do so however I am greeted with the error:

bad interpreter: No such file or directory

Research indicates that this is normally caused by one of two things, either having bad line breaks in the script file due to it being edited under windows, or the not having an appropriate call to an interpreter on the first line (ie #!/bin/sh).

Unfortunately, neither of these are the cause of my problem as the script file has no extra line breaks (and shouldn’t as I’ve simply extracted it from the source Dled from the authors at xml.apache.org) and #!/bin/sh does exist on the first line of the script. Furthermore, on the system /bin/sh is a valid path and can be executed from any dir and ultimately is linked to bash.

I have also tried all of this while logged in as root as well as ensuring that my user (either myself or root) has full access to all of the files.

Any suggestions as to what else I might try to be able to get a working install of it?

Note: Ordinarily I’d just install from RPM, but as far as I can find there is no Xerces-C 2.5 RPM for Mandrake, nor a devel pack.

Update: 9:45 AM CST:

On the advice of a friend, I tried to run the script with: “sh runConfigure” and has the following returned:

: command not found60
 : command not found81
 'UnConfigure: line 82: syntax error near unexpected token
 'UnConfigure: line 82: `usage()

Also, for reference, here is an ls -l a couple of the files involved in all of this:

ls -l runConfigure
-rwxrwxr-x  1 brendang brendang 21301 Jun 22 08:26 runConfigure*

ls -l /bin/sh
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 4 Jun 16 04:11 /bin/sh -> bash*

I'm afraid it does look like a badly formattted file, are you sure there is no space before the #!/bin/sh on the first line, or are some long line split rather than word wrapped?

If you use cat to see the file contents you may not see the line breaks, try with less or xemacs, and run dos2unix eventually

liddler: There are no extra spaces before the #!/bin/sh, nor any split lines. In doing a comparison between the file in question and the corresponding file from different versions of xerces.

alain_tesio: While a cat would not reveal line breaks, vi or any number of other text editors would... which I’ve tried. Because no app has displayed any extra line breaks I am forced to believe that dos2unix would then be worthless.

Thank you to both of you for your thoughts, but they did not solve the problem I fear. I have found a solution to my problem thankfully. It seems that in some way the file I was attempting to use was in some way corrupted prior to being gziped and uploaded to their ftp site.

The solution: downloading the 2.5 version of the source rather than the ‘current’ version and using it.
