Which Versions of Linux????

Hi all,
I am a Windows user for years... Now a days I am using Windows XP..... The reason that I did never used Linux was that I though it was meant for Servers etc. only and not for a Single PC user and its user interface is not that friendly and installing drivers for devices is a very difficult task.... But a friend of mine has said that this is not the case now anymore.... So I searched Internet for Linux.... and I was puzzled to find many different Linux versions like Knoppix Red Hat etc. etc. SO as a completely ignorant man I would like to ask the following Questions.....

1) What are these different versions of Linux availabale? How much will the cost me? and which is the best for someone who uses his computer for Internet access, Watching Videos and Listening to Audios and most importantly having a TV Tuner Card to watch Cable TV? (200 Points)

2) Can I use it in tandem with Windows XP ? i.e both installed and accessing each other's hard disk partitions? and also does Linux support NTFS or do I have to convert to some other File System? (100 Points)

3) What development tools are available i.e I usually develop using VB6 VC6 and VB.NET..... I think they are not available in Linux.... SO what are my options? (100 Points)

4) Playing Games???? Are those games can be played in Windows (Like Halo II etc. ) also run in Linux or not? (100 Points)
