  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. Linux Crontab Question

Hello.

I am very VERY new to server side anythings.  I have a VPS account with interland where i host many different web sites.
I want to make an email script run automatically every day, so i heard i need to do something called a CRON JOB.

OK, so I:
created a test PHP script in one of the vhost directories called my_first_cron.php
SSHed into my server
typed crontab -e
got the open page and typed this to test my crontab prowess:
 
* * * * * ..usr/local/www/vhosts/x.com/htdocs/my_first_cron.php

Exited the program within SSH and it said "installing new crontab"
hopefully this would decrease a certain value in my MYSQL database by (1) every minute.
I waited and waited and nothing happened.

I know there is something drastically wrong with this, but there is a suprising lack of info on how to do crontabs on the internet.

I am using my mac unix terminal to SSH into the Linux Free BSD server where i have access to everything above and including the /usr/ directory.

points will be awarded to the two following chriteria:
(1) How well your script works
(2) How completely and easliy you explain why your script worked and mine did not (keeping in mind that I know nothing about this)
