Need newbie info on setting up Apache/MySQL/PHP/FTP

I'm putting Linux on an old computer to run a web server. It used to run windows so I'm fairly well versed in Apache/MySQL/PHP, it's just the Linux part that I don't know too much about.

I'm competent enough to figure things out, I just need some info on where to start. Specifically, how do I configure Apache/MySQL/PHP. And especially how do I set up an FTP client so that I can upload the www files from my Windows based computer?

I haven't decided on any particular distro yet. I installed Mandriva LE 2005 and I'm also going to give Fedora 4 a try.

Anyway, I don't need a step by step guide, just some general info on what I'm trying to do. Thanks!
