The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Unknown proxy host

Tags: unknown, proxy
Hi,

I am running Linux Suse 9.2 and after a sudden server shutdown due to power outage, I got the error "Unknown proxy host" whenever trying to connect to the Internet with Konqueror. I am sure that the machine has Internet connection and the proxy host I specified is correct. It is the same with the one before the power outage incident.

Could anyone let me know what the problem might be and how to solve this? Thank you very much.

Hi

Try without proxy settings.

Launch Konq with K menu -> Internet -> Web Browser (Konqueror)
Go to Settings -> Configure Konqueror
Scroll down to the "Proxy" icon on the left, and select it
Select "Connect to the Internet directly"
Click "OK

Hi,

Thank you for your quick reply.

I tried that to open www.google.com and now got the error "unknown host www.google.com" instead of my previously specified host name.

Sounds like a dns resolution problem check your name server started correctly after the crash, if you use anything like dynamic updats syou might need to manually delete the journal files.

Thank you.

Sorry I'm not used to Linux, what are the journal files?

I would say from your responce that this is not the problem as no linux I have seen comes with dynamic updating. Are you using the linux box for dns resolution or are you dns request sent to another computer?

maybe you really did need that proxy host set in your browser, and that's why you can't surf anymore...if the proxy was a host name, you need to make sure that you have a correct DNS server entry or HOSTS file entry to find that proxy host.

Well, is the server running a proxy server? Is Squid running on server after the reboot? If you do have root access to the server, pls run
"service squid status" or "/etc/init.d/squid status" and see the output. If it says squid (or whatever your proxy software is) is not running, start it and then fire up your browser.

Also have a read through your message log /var/log/messages and see if there is any obvious problems (maybe paste the log if your not sure).

paranoidcookie,

I think the dns request is sent to another computer. I'll look at the /var/log/messages

JammyPak,
I think I have the correct proxy host name. I don't know where to fill out the DNS server entry. I didn't see that option in Konqueror (I am totally new to Linux and I don't often use Konqueror. I only saw the Proxy configuration.

gvkrishna,
I will check if Squid is running.

Thank you all for your responses.

Questions: the machine you're using is the proxy server or not? you can't surf from your PC since the server rebooted, or you can't surf from the server since it rebooted? I'm just trying to get a better idea of the situation.

I would try this:
1) run 'cat /etc/resolv.conf' to see your DNS server - just confirm it's the right value.
2) in the browser, is the proxy address given as an IP address, or a host name? If it's an address, try to ping that address to check for a response. If it's a hostname, do 'nslookup <hostname>' to see if it can resolve the name to an address

gvkrishna,

I checked. I don´t think I have squid in my machine. My machine is connected to another computer (main server I suppose). I am not sure what proxy software I have.

paranoidcookie,
I look at the log messages and didnt see anything helpful.

07.15.2005 at 07:30AM PDT, ID: 14451135
JammyPak,

the machine I am using is not the proxy server. The server is somewhere else.
I can´t surf from my machine but I know for sure my machine is online (there is internet connection) only cant connect to the www with browser.

I ran 'cat /etc/resolv.conf' and got no feedback, I ran ´/etc/resolv.conf'  and got the feedback "Pemission denided"

I tried nslookup for the hostname of the proxy server and it gave me the response: "connection timed out; no server could be reached"

Try ping 66.249.87.104 (one of googles servers) if you get a responce if means your network connection is working but dns is not. It you get no response its a sign your network connection is not correctly configured

"I tried nslookup for the hostname of the proxy server and it gave me the response: "connection timed out; no server could be reached""

OK, this is probably the problem...you can't resolve the name of the proxy, therefore you can't find it.

You need to check you networking settings to confirm the correct DNS server entries are in there. If you don't have permission as yourself, then someone will have to do it as root on that machine. If there's a GUI for changing the network settings, then try that...

Hi ,

Can u try to configure IP ADDRESS OF your proxy server instead of hostname in your machine ( in browser ) it works.Reason Dns which are used in your machine they r unable to find hostname to IP so ...they unable to find Proxy ip form hostname.

Just remove hostname and use IP_OF_PROXY_SERVER in browser .!!!!

First of all,

Thank you much for all your replies. I'm sorry since I wasn't able to finalize this question sooner (cause of travel).
Finally some admin fixed it. I think it was some settings  but I still don't know exactly why.  Couldn't ask for details due to language barrier.  For this reason, I am not sure what would be the accepted answer here so I'd like to split points. Thank you.
