The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Best Linux FTP Server?

Asked by Joshua_Gottlieb in Linux, Ubuntu, Linux Distributions

Ok, so I need an opinion based answer here.  I've worked with various win32 based ftp servers, and while the features have been great, they have been flaky.

I wanted to see what good linux ftp server alternatives are out there.

Here are a few of my requirements:

Supports SSL/FTP

Relatively simple user management (I don't want some long complicated procedure to do something simple like add a user)

Dynamic IP support

Good PASV configurability (I'm behind a firewall that has a dynamic IP)

Bandwidth throttling

Ideally some nice real-time monitoring similar to what is provided by most win32 based ftp servers.. i.e. see what commands users are entering in real time, watch what transfers are currently taking place.

Semi-granular security - I will be setting up the ftp server on a linux host, but the files being shared will be on a win32 host, so I'll be mounting smbfs shares.

GUI would be nice (even if just via webmin) but not critical.

Good overall logging etc.

I've looked a little at wu-ftp and proftpd etc... they look like good standards, but there are many others out there.

I'm trying not to kill a lot of time learning about one, then realizing it doesn't do quite what I want and learning another etc... Hoping to go with a "best of breed" right out of the gate.

Any input would be appreciated.

Joshua
