Recovering an accidently reformatted ext3 partition

I accidentally left a Debian install disc in my CD drive (was installing packages that night) when I went away for the weekend. Another user switched on my PC and somehow missed the bright red text saying that the installer could wipe your data and accidentally reformatted my main data partition. Is there any way to recover some of the data using Free
Software because I don't want to pay $500+ for a recovery service.
