Using a USB memory stick under linux

would i be able to use my cruzer mini 256mb memory stick under linux?

if so, how would i mount it to the linux system? (or do i have to reformat it for linux???)

so far i have tried the following commands
#mkdir /mnt/usb
mount -t msdos (or vfat) /dev/sdas /mnt/usb

and under /proc/bus/usb, it shows
001, 002, 003, devices, drivers

but how would i be able to view the files in the memory stick?
