The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

USB card reader and mp3 player no longer work when plugged in

Some time ago I installed Mandrake 2006.0 on my machine and was pleasantly surprised to find that my USB storage devices worked out of the box: just plug in a device (such as an iRiver mp3 player) and it is detected and mounted on a newly-created mount point /mnt/IHP100 (for example) and I can start using it straight away.

I recently upgraded some modules via MandrivaUpdate (security/bugfix update) and this has stopped working: when I plug in a device I get a line in /var/log/messages:

Apr 7 15:11:23 pingu4 kernel: usb 5-8: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5

I found an old version udev-054-6mdk.i586.rpm on the server and installed it with --upgrade --oldpackage and also installed hotplug-2004_09_23-22mdk.

Now if I run "modprobe usb-storage" as root and plug in the flash card reader or iRiver, I get more messages:

Apr 10 15:42:42 pingu4 kernel: scsi6 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
Apr 10 15:42:47 pingu4 kernel: Vendor: TOSHIBA Model: MK4004GAH Rev: JC00
Apr 10 15:42:47 pingu4 kernel: Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 00
Apr 10 15:42:47 pingu4 kernel: SCSI device sdc: 78126048 512-byte hdwr sectors (40001 MB)
Apr 10 15:42:47 pingu4 kernel: sdc: assuming drive cache: write through
Apr 10 15:42:47 pingu4 kernel: SCSI device sdc: 78126048 512-byte hdwr sectors (40001 MB)
Apr 10 15:42:47 pingu4 kernel: sdc: assuming drive cache: write through
Apr 10 15:42:48 pingu4 kernel: /dev/scsi/host6/bus0/target0/lun0: p1
Apr 10 15:42:48 pingu4 kernel: Attached scsi disk sdc at scsi6, channel 0, id 0, lun 0

I can manually mount the device via: "mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/cf" for example, so I have a workaround, but I would like to get it working automatically, the way it used to.
