dual boot, partitions, and security?

given: one fresh, clean Windows laptop, no virus, spyware, etc.
ok so i want to use Linux on this without wiping the drive, that is to say, i might, on occasion, use the Windows, for strictly non-online activities. you can see i'm totally through with Bill and his daily security updates...

so how do i accomplish this? when i use Linux i don't want Windows to load, but i'm hoping that my Linux install will be able to share the hard drive, and maybe the same files such as a word doc i create in windows...or whatever!

so can i have a dual boot without a partition? if not, how would i get the files from the Windows partition to the Linux partition?

you can see there are a lot of questions here from a newby..so i'm calling this difficult (250!)
