Linux Recommendations

I have a spare computer that I've been interested in installing a version of Linux on to start getting familiar with something other than Windows. From what I've seen so far there seems to be tons of versions and variations available, some free and some not. My question is what are the favorites among the experts in this TA, what would you recommend for a pretty slick Linux OS, and which ones are free to download, and of those which have some nice applications?

Basically I don't have that much knowledge with Linux and would like to get familiar with something that has a nice environment, isn't a nightmare to install, and is highly recommended.
