The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Linux freezing problems on IBM HS20

Asked by PsiCop in Linux, Linux Distributions

I'm having some very wierd performance issues on an IBM HS20 blade, and it's left me perplexed. I'm hoping someone else may have some ideas.

The blade has dual 2GHz dual-core CPUs and 2 GB of RAM. Boots fine. Has local disk and also QLogic NICs to SAN storage. The OS and swap are all local (some Oracle stuff is on the SAN).

The OS is RHEL v3.0.5. Default run level is 3 (no X).

While running, the system will mysteriously "freeze". This occurs roughly every 15-20 seconds, and lasts about 40-to-50 seconds. If I didn't know better, I'd think it was running Winblows ME.

I've tried running top to isolate the process hogging the CPU. No luck. Even going in as root and running "top -q" doesn't prevent the "freeze" from stopping top in its tracks.

The best I've been able to ferret out with top is that, when the freeze happens, the only non-idle process (aside from top) is kjournald. When observing the system through top, it freezes with kjournald shown in an Uninterruptable Sleep state. I'm not sure how significant that is.

I stripped the system down to a very vanilla Run Level 3 (disabled all Oracle-related processes). No change.

I switched to Run Level 1 (telinit 1) and the issue persists.

This is only one of many IBM HS20 blades of similar configuration we have running this flavor of Linux. As far as I'm aware, its the only one experiencing this issue.

Does anyone have any idea on what the root cause might be? Does anyone have any troubleshooting ideas I haven't mentioned?
