The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

VNC problem on Linux CentOS 3.8 - can't get past WinXP client that only gets black screen / X for a cursor when it connects.

I'm a Linux newbie.  I've read many different posts on the net, as well as here on EE regarding this problem. Only one "workaround" has had any effect, which I detail below.

I've tried modifying my xstartup file with several changes, none have worked (this is the current file):

#!/bin/sh
[ -r $HOME/.Xresources ]
&& xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
unset SESSION_MANAGER
exec gnome-session &

There was one post in particular that did work, but I don't understand why, nor do I understand how to get past the problem other than typing the recommended commands below.  It just seems odd that it quit working all of a sudden.  I found the workaround at:

http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Linux/Setup/Q_20866417.html?sfQueryTermInfo=1+linux+remov+vnc

The Assisted Solution by will134 is what I can type to get a session running.

I'm know I'm being redundant, but VNC was working properly at one point. I didn't have to type the commands suggested by willy134 to get it to display properly.  So why would the gnome session not be generated for the VNC client?  I even modified my rc.local file with:

vncserver :1
gnome-session &

Still no joy.

Thanks in advance.
