The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Compiling aar81xx module in kernel under Debian Linux

Asked by satmanuk in Linux, Debian Linux

Hi I am trying to get an Adaptec RAID 1430SA raid card working under Debian Linux. To get it working I need the aar81xx module to be installed, but as its not inside the default Debian kernel I needed to recompile it with support.

I downloaded the driver source (Adaptec SATA HostRAID SHIM Package v1.4.11949). I then extracted the rpm and used alien to convert it to a .deb. I then installed the .deb which put the driver's source in /usr/src/adaptec .

I then followed the instuctions in the README by going to /usr/src/adaptec/build/ and running
"./Build ../driver-aar81xx ../shipped-binary ../../linux-source-2.6.18 merge_driver=Yes blist+=i686". That seemed to run fine but then when I do make menuconfig to configure the kernel it hasn't added the option for the aar81xx module like it said it should.

I figured this was because I am on Debian and not the Redhat version they recommended so I  checked to see if the aar81xx driver source had been copied into the kernel tree. It had in /usr/src/linux/drivers/scsi/aar81xx/ .

Next I started to try and get the driver added to the menuconfig options. I added an entry to /usr/src/linux/drivers/scsi/Kconfig . I ran menuconfig again and it has the option for the driver but when I compile the kernel the module isn't there.

So my question is what other files do I need to edit to have the aar81xx module compiled into the kernel? Equally if there is another way to run the Build command to make it do the work for me that would be fine. ThanksStart Free Trial
