Best OS for a server running VMWare Server virtual machines

I want to run several VM ware servers on a Dell PowerEdge 2950 server with 2 x Quad-core 64bit Xeon CPU, 8 GB Ram. Which is a more per formant host OS - Windows 2003 server R2 64 bit or CentOS 64 bit? I have read in the literature that Linux distributions are poor at handling SMP. Is that true. The objective of VM ware servers is to run Oracle database and Oracle Application server. I want to avoid using ESX servers because of the cost.
